Revealing natural fluorescence in transparent insect wings by linear and nonlinear optical techniques

چکیده

For most natural organisms, the physical, chemical and biological aspects of fluorescence emission are poorly understood. example, to best our knowledge, from transparent wings any 3000 known species cicadas has never been reported in literature. These exhibit anti-reflective properties arising quasi-periodic arrays nipples. Our study, using linear nonlinear optical techniques, including spectrofluorimetry, two-photon spectroscopy Second Harmonic Generation (SHG), reveals grey common (Cicada orni Lyristes (Tibicen) plebejus, respectively), as well broad-bordered bee hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis). The study suggests that would be more widespread insect than what was previously believed. Comparing this result Bornean damselfly (Vestalis amabilis), we inferred probably arises resilin, a protein enhance wing flexibility. Moreover, investigation insects’ provided further insight into structure, indicating multiphoton techniques add valuable information for analysis integuments. strong SHG signal detected veins implies these materially organised non-centrosymmetric hence non-random fashion.

Stable structural color patterns displayed on transparent insect wings.

Color patterns play central roles in the behavior of insects, and are important traits for taxonomic studies. Here we report striking and stable structural color patterns--wing interference patterns (WIPs)--in the transparent wings of small Hymenoptera and Diptera, patterns that have been largely overlooked by biologists. These extremely thin wings reflect vivid color patterns caused by thin fi...

Revealing Pairwise Coupling in Linear-Nonlinear Networks

Through an asymptotic analysis of a simple network, we derive an estimate of the coupling between a pair of units when all other units are unobservable. The analysis is based on a model where the response of each unit is a linear-nonlinear function of a white noise stimulus. The results accurately determine the coupling when all unmeasured units respond to the stimulus differently than the meas...

Artificial insect wings

The development of flapping-wing micro air vehicles (MAVs) demands a systematic exploration of the available design space to identify ways in which the unsteady mechanisms governing flapping-wing flight can best be utilized for producing optimal thrust or maneuverability. Mimicking the wing kinematics of biological flight requires examining the potential effects of wing morphology on flight per...

A review of transparent and artificial boundary conditions techniques for linear and nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

In this review article we discuss different techniques to solve numerically the time-dependent Schrödinger equation on unbounded domains. We present in detail the most recent approaches and describe briefly alternative ideas pointing out the relations between these works. We conclude with several numerical examples from different application areas to compare the presented techniques. We mainly ...
